The History Behind One Two Three Four Five rhyme

The 1 2 3 4 5 poem is a traditional song that was used for counting numbers for kids.  This great song was created for parents and teachers to help children to recognize and memorise the number from 1 to 10. This rhyme was first invented in Mother Goose’s Melody book in the 1760s and later same version was altered to the longer version in the 1880s by the American nursery rhymes collector Henry Bolton the older version had only 1 stanza and dealt with a hare and the new version contains a fish.

You can help your young ones to remember the numbers from 1 to 10 in an exciting way by adding many educational activities in their learning process so that they can pronounce and sing them nicely:

1. Checking Math Skills

This is the best activity you can teach your children to improve their math skills. This rhyme will also help them to work on basic arithmetic operations such as addition and subtraction. Since the rhyme contains fishes, it’s best to teach them arithmetic operations.

For example: Ask your child if I take out four fish out of ten, how many will be there? If they give an answer correctly give them chocolate this way, they will get more involved in the activity and it will improve their addition and subtraction.

2. Identify the Number

This is another fun activity children will love playing. For this take 1 bowl and add five to ten fish to it. Give them numbers from 1 to 10 and ask them to pick any one fish and identify the numbers on that fish. This activity will test what digits the child can recognize.

3. Identify Fish Colours and Counting

This is another exciting activity all young ones will love doing it. Start with the first 5 fishes and then slowly move to 6 to 10 digits. For this give them five fishes and ask them to colour all the fishes in a different colour then again give the remaining 5 fishes and ask them to colour them with different colours. Now give your children digits from 1 to 10 for referring and ask them to write it down on all fishes. Once they are done tell them to pick 5-number fish and ask them the colour of it. If they pick 5 digits correctly give them chocolate.

Now teach them about counting. Show them a number 4 and say I want 4 fishes out of 10 and if they pick 4 fishes correctly again give them chocolate. This activity will engage them in learning more and more numbers and they will remember it all. Doing this activity will help them to improve their thinking process, counting skills, improve math skills, improve drawing skills, and writing and they will learn about colours name.

4. Question and Answer

Once your child has learned One Two Three Four Five’ nursery poem test to see if they remember it. You can test by asking them some questions which are related to rhyme.
